yes it can be done. There are lots of tutorials on youtube on how to do it, but i have no experience on the subject myself.

there are prefixed external graphiccards for sale. u better buy that stuff. BUT the question is, is really only the gpu from the laptop shit?

mostly the cpu isnt much better than the gpu.

i suggest to buy or build an pc. u can easily build an gaming pc for ~400-600€ and play anything on mid-high.
